Catching a Break

Texas 22, Kansas State 17

Finally, finally, finally our losing streak came to a halt. Our guys managed a win over the K State Wildcats. Because of our 5-7 record, there was no bowl game for us, so this had to count for a momentum builder heading into 2022. And it was wonderful to send these seniors out with a win after such a disappointing season.

Ronnie, our tailgate trailer maestro, moved out of state, and after the Kansas game, he took his trailer home with him for the off-season. He was with family for Thanksgiving, so our other tailgate gurus put together a smaller operation so we could still hang out pregame.

After the game, we took our traditional end-of-season photo. Until next season, HOOK ’EM!

This is far from the first time I’ve used Mountain Dew for the Mountaineers. Seems like I alternate between the Dew and Mounds candy bars for that team. But after I posted the 2021 Dew pic on Facebook, I learned that the soda has an additional connection to West Virginia!

In spite of my unintentionally appropriate spelling medium, we still lost our sixth in a row. Boo.

We got a new head coach this year. The previous coach learned what the coach before him had figured out: You can’t lose to Kansas. Welp, about that.

We never led in regulation, but when we tied the game with 22 seconds left, we thought we would steal this one from the Jayhawks. We scored a TD in overtime, but then so did Kansas. And then KU went for 2. And then they got it. Grrrr. We didn’t realize it then, of course, but the Jayhawks’ big win over us was the beginning of a turnaround for their program that included a head-turning start to their 2022 season.

Highlights from this game: Cara and family were there! Cara and her three youngest even came early for the Bevo Blvd. festivities. Again, it was a shame they didn’t get to see a win, but it was great to spend time with them.

Not sure: Is it EYE-owa State? Or maybe Ay-yi-yi-owa State? In any case, this was ugly. But hey, this time we had just a 4-point lead for about half a quarter, so we didn’t much of a lead to blow.

Yet again, we blew a lead. As we headed into the fourth quarter, one Texas fan stood up and proclaimed, “WE ARE NOT BLOWING ANOTHER LEAD IN THE FOURTH.” I guess the team couldn’t hear him from our far corner of the Baylor stadium.

My special guest this week was Ryan! It was a bummer that he didn’t get to see a win, but it was fun having his company!

Once again, we blew a decent lead, falling apart offensively. Coming one week after our disappointing loss to our biggest rival, this game continued the losing streak that would carry us down, down, down through game 11, knocking us out of bowl season.

This game’s highlights (besides the first half) were Anne’s attendance and the sandwich from Antone’s.

Fast Start, Frustrating Finish

ou 55, Texas 48

We hoped to capitalize on Brett’s lucky-charm status after that big win over TCU, and at first, it seemed to be working! Brett’s first Texas-ou game started with a bang, our Horns getting a quick 14-0 lead. Our guys even held a 38-20 lead at the half. Too bad we had to play that second half! ou took the lead in the fourth quarter, and even though we tied it up again late, the sooners scored even later, with 3 seconds left in the game.

But guess what? ou still sucks. And Brett now knows firsthand why the Red River Rivalry game is so special!

A few weeks before this game, Ryan had texted me a photo of one of the fair’s winning art pieces. It looked a little familiar!

This was a child’s creation, and I’m flattered if my “mustard art,” like the 2008 pic below, inspired her!

Finally, finally, finally my Horns were able to beat the Frogs in Fort Worth. Apparently, Brett was my lucky charm! Even though he supports my football fandom, to that point he had attended very few games with me. Since my usual companions were otherwise occupied that Saturday, he agreed to come with. And whadyaknow, we WON for the first time in a while!

P.S. – I did attempt to cook those frog legs, btw, but they were NASTY with a capital N! Several years prior when I had breaded and baked the frog legs, they were pretty darn tasty, but not this time around. Yuck! Good thing that W tasted great!

Our guys made it look easy, running all over the Red Raiders. It gave us hope for conference play, even if it turned out to be false hope.

It was an all-around glorious day, with plenty of sunshine to light up Bevo Blvd. and Smokey’s Midway.

On the field, the Horns were rollin’, and Texas Mariachi and Ray Benson were rockin’!

And the pièce de résistance: Southwest Airlines fixed the errant apostrophe that was buggin’ the crap out of me!

So all in all, a great day!
